Hey everyone,
Whoa, it’s a new year! Great job on making it through; give yourself a good pat on the back. Here’s to a new year of making more art & staying in touch with how you feel, and following your path!
Keeping this short and punchy, so let’s get to it:
you + me:
As promised— New Artificial Images Classes! It’s a 10-week intensive that will cover training your own models, using both RunwayML and Google Colab. PLUS Derrick and I will be covering not just StyleGAN-ADA (the thing everyone’s waiting for), but also a slew of other generative models like Next Frame Prediction, MUNIT, and Pix2Pix. Really excited for this one! Feb 24 - Apr 28, Wednesday nights 7:30pm Eastern.
This Friday, I’ll be speaking at the Learning to Teach conference hosted by NYU x School for Poetic Computation with my partner Evan. If you’re teaching online, I highly recommend attending! Evan’s a language educator and leads ExcelMandarin, and we’ll be sharing our insights on making online classes not suck. Our talk is How to Build Community DURING Class-Time, this Friday Jan 22, 5:15-6:45pm Eastern. Tickets are donation-based.
I’ve been playing more with music & TouchDesigner in my pieces— here’s an example with cello music from my friend Nathan Chan.
The AI Art World
2 weeks ago: DALL-E came out from OpenAI. It’s WILD. It’s a model based on GPT-3 (a kick-ass text model that aside from fooling humans, can translate regular text into legal-speak, and even write code).
Luba Elliott published her Creative AI Newsletter. I highly highly recommend subscribing to her newsletter. It’s a packed, punchy list of what’s been happening in AI art, music, design, exhibitions, research, opportunities, and more.
I’ll also end with this video from 3Blue1Brown explaining how Neural Networks work. Watch this, and the subsequent videos on gradient descent to understand how it all works from the bottom up!
Til next time!
Hugs & Robots,
Lia
P.S.- Let me know in the comments what you want to see more of in these newsletters, questions you have, how you’re feeling! I want to hear from you all :)
